Soundtracking books like they're a movie

tl;dr I got bored during quarantine and started a fun side project to keep me entertained.

I’ve touched my DJ equipment once in the past 3 months (blasphemy!) but have been listening to a ton of new stuff, a lot of what isn’t what I’d say “dj-able” in the traditional sense. It’s been more “tunes while stuck in your house” and less “dance in a dark corner” vibes. And since I can’t do without a new project, I created a new Spotify playlist series and instagram to go with it. Because everyone knows I love a good playlist, and I’ve been reading more than ever.

The instagram account is part traditional #bookstagram, with reviews and photos of books, and then mashed with Spotify playlists inspired by these books. They goal is to try and capture the mood and essence of the piece. I’m essentially pretending I’m a music supervisor but doing it for books instead of TV shows.

The first playlist is for Invisible Women, which is a great non-fiction read about the data gap around women. So much of this data is missing (or ignored), that women are pretty fucked over in designs, healthcare, and general representation. Since this is less story based and more outrageous facts that make me want to pull my hair out, I pulled together some of my favorite emerging women artists who you should listen to. You can hear that here.

Upcoming playlists will include one for the book of short stories Exhalation (which wow is an insanely amazing read) and the Irish read Exciting Times.

Examples of my photos are below, but the best experience is over on Instagram. You can catch the playlists here on Spotify. All will be continually updated as I have fun with Illustrator and get back into photography.

Soo publishing houses: let me DJ your next book launch when everything’s open? Great thx.
